What is Cumin?

Cumin is the dried fruit (seed) and is a member of the parsley family. This spice is an edible plant and is used in its whole seed form and powder. The cumin powder is used as a leading spice in the other spices such as Chili powder, Garam Masala and curry powder or added as a flavoring in foods, sauces and also cumin seed is used as a drug in the medical consumption such as digestion problems, increase urine flow, bloating and etc.

Cumin Features

Cumin plant: The cumin is a plant same carrot bush. The plant grows to 30–50 cm (12–20 in) tall and is harvested by hand. This plant naturally and wild grows in Afghanistan, Iran, India and other countries and its life is one or two years. It’s branched stem and has a diameter of 3–5 cm. Each branch has two to three sub-branches
 
Cumin seed (fruit) : The cumin fruit (seed ) is small, thin, narrow, crescent-shaped and has five prominent line . The size is about 2 - 6 mm. It usually reaches 25 cm (10 in), and tends to droop under its own weight.

Cumin seed (fruit) varieties:  Green Cumin (scientific name: Cuminum cyminum) and Black Cumin (scientific name: Carum carvil) that the second is known "Persian cumin".

Cumin seed(fruit) flavor and taste : All parts of the plant, especially fruits, have a good smell and taste. More time before full ripening seeds are harvested in which case, they will have a high percentage of essence.

Where is Cumin plant growing?


The cumin plant is originally / initially grown and cultivated in Iran and the Mediterranean countries and now there are cumin plants in all tropical and Mediterranean climates including India, Iran, Egypt, Afghanistan, Syria, Turkey and other countries. Most of cumin in Iran grows in Kerman province. The best and finest cumin to Kerman is tissue Baft County that grows wild.


Suitable Climate for Cumin 


The tropical and Mediterranean climates are most suitable for its growth because cultivation of cumin requires a long, hot summer of three to four months. The cumin is a drought-tolerant, tropical, or subtropical plant. It has a growth season of 100 – 120 days. The optimum growth temperature ranges are between 25 and 30° C.
 

Cumin Planting and Harvesting Time

In India, cumin is planted from October to the first of December, and harvesting starts in February. In Syria and Iran, cumin is planted from mid-November to mid-December (extensions up to mid-January are possible) and harvested in June/July.
