What is liquorice-licorice?

Liquorice or licorice is an important medicinal plant and is a member of the Fabaceae family. Its binomial name is Glycyrrhiza glabra.  Liquorice is also known as liquorice root, sweet root or gan zao (Chinese licorice).The original Latin name for liquorice is Glycyrrhiza glabra .We can be extracted sweet flavor of its roots. The liquorice plant is native to southern Europe and parts of Asia including: Iran, Afghanistan, China, Pakistan, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Turkey. This plant is more used in underground stems and roots. The Liquorice or licorice is used as a drug in the medical consumption. In order to Liquorice-licoriceas as an alternative medicine, is used in dried, powdered, capsule and liquid forms for a variety of ailments such as opening up the lungs, clearing the voice, anti - thirst and hunger, Anti - stomach trouble, Anti -throat trouble and livers. Also Liquorice or licorice is used as a flavoring agent in sweets and tobacco.


Liquorice-licorice Features

  • Liquorice-licorice plant: The plant height is up to one meter and two meters in temperate areas. Liquorice-licorice's leaves are from 7 to 15 cm and also are long narrow leaves and contain 9 to 17 Brgchhast. Plant leaves are oval, smooth in their sides. The flowers are in colors of purple, yellow or purple or bluish-white and are integrated at the end of flowering stems can be seen. The advents of flowers are early summer.
  • Liquorice-licorice fruits: the Fruit are pods, rectangular and their length are of 2 to 3 cm and usually have 3 to 6 bean-shaped fruit.
  • Liquorice-licorice flavor and taste:  Much of the sweetness in liquorice comes from glycyrrhizin, which has a sweet taste, 30–50 times the sweetness of sugar. The sweetness is very different from sugar, being less instant, tart, and lasting longer.


How we can get Liquorice-licorice extract?

There are two main methods of making licorice extract. In both methods, the roots of the licorice plants are harvested and dried, after which they are cleaned:

  • The first method (old): the licorice roots then are ground into powder, which can then be used as is or mixed with water.
  • In the second method (modern): the roots are pulped and boiled, and the extract is concentrated by allowing the water to evaporate. If the extract is in dried form, it can be stored indefinitely.

  4. Licorice is sometimes used along with the herbs Panax ginseng and Bupleurum falcatum to improve the function of the adrenal glands, especially in people who have taken steroid drugs long-term. Steroids tend to suppress the activity of the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands produce important hormones that regulate the body’s response to stress.
  5. Licorice is also used in an herbal form called Shakuyaku-kanzo-to to increase fertility in women with a hormonal disorder called polycystic ovary syndrome. In combination with other herbs, licorice is also used to treat prostatecancer and the skin disorder known as eczema. Some people use licorice as a shampoo to reduce oiliness in their hair.
